Fraud Awarded

It wasn't quarterback Upton O'Good. It wasn't running back Ernesto Hornets. But a State Pen. player still won the Dememtrius Award as the SCAB's most valuable player for 1998.

Wide receiver Mel Fraud, who led the nation in receptions, reception yardage and scoring, with a phenomenal 23 touchdowns, was named the recipient of the 24th Demetrius Award. Fraud was the first receiver ever to win the award, only quarterbacks and running backs having won previously.

State Pen. head coach Max DeNife, after bringing in so many good players, finally got to see one of them  win. DeNife was the winner of the first Demetrius Award, as runningback at State Pen., in 1975. Fraud is the first winner from the school since.

Hornets had been expected to win the award ever since he arrived at State Pen four years ago. But now a senior, he will graduate without it, having to watch a teammate take it his final year. Quarterback O'Good arrived last season and has led the SCAB in passing ever since. He seemed to be the most likely candidate to take the award away from last year's winner, Lady Warship running back Buster Hymen, who led the league in rushing, also a second straight year.

But Fraud's 22 touchdown catches were half of those O'Good threw for. His 101 receptions and 1265 yards receiving accounted for more than half of O'Good's completions and passing yardage. And in the tally system for the Demetrius Award, the SCAB Player of the Week Awards also count. Fraud was twice named national player of the week and one other time was a conference player of the week. O'Good received only one conference Player of the Week Award this season.

Thus on a team loaded with talent, defending national champions and undefeated a second season in a row, Mel Fraud became the standout this year. Fraud is a junior and will return next season for a shot at another Demetrius Award. Of course his main competition will be none other than his teammate, Upton O'Good.

In the point totals for the award, Mountain Valley quarterback Peter Andy Woolf finished second. Last season's winner Hymen finished third, and O'Good fourth. Though Woolf was behind five other quarterbacks in the passer ratings, he received Player of the Week Awards five times this season, and was primarily responsible for the amazing turnaround of the Choir Boys who went undefeated until the final game of the season and stole the Eucalyptus Leaf Bowl away from the Heroes of Polar Exploration Memorial College. In terms of one player's value, Woolf may well have been the single most valuable player for what he accomplished this season.
